SSHL student Art Exhibit

Friday saw the opening of an art exhibition by SSHL students at SigtunaKulturgård. School Director Margret Benedikz was there and was once again bowled over by the work on display. “The art department at SSHL is such a dynamic, encouraging team. Students really are encouraged and supported to develop to the fullest of their potential. I am continually impressed by the work staff and students do,” said Margret. If you’re in Sigtuna in the next couple of weeks, do try and see the work. The exhibition is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 AM – 4 PM and runs until May 20th.

Visit From Gustavus Adolphus College

Director Margret Benedikz and Principal Eddy Johansson met with Professor Deb Pitton of Gustavus Adolphus College today to discuss a possible partnership.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a residential liberal arts college firmly rooted in its Swedish and Lutheran heritage. Founded in Minnesota in 1862, Gustavus Adolphus college balances “educational tradition with innovation and to foster the development of values as an integral part of intellectual growth.”

Teacher of the year!

Congratulations Catarina Arnell, mathematics teacher, for winning Educator of the year in Sigtuna Municipality!

We accompanied representatives from the Municipality to her office yesterday to surprise her with their educator of the year award.

This morning we interrupted her class to celebrate her success with her students, to let her know how proud we are and to thank her students for the nomination.

Thank you Jan Westerberg, Sheida Delgoshaie and Carl Dahlin for the great work you do!

This is the second year running that a teacher at SSHL has won this coveted award. Last year we celebrated Stefan Eriksson for the very same award! Keep your eyes peeled for a video about Catarina Arnell like this one about last year’s winner Stefan Eriksson!

We would also like to extend our gratitude to the team at Sigtuna Municipality for organizing this award!

50-dagars – less than 50 days to graduation

This past Thursday saw SSHL celebrating “50-dagars”, a much-loved tradition where the graduating students celebrate that there are only 50 days left until graduation. They also receive their Abiturient-caps 50 days before gradutaion which traditionally signifies that they are eligible candidates to receive a high school diploma this year.  The tradition begins on the steps to Midgåren where the boarding houses each perform a skit or show of some kind often ending in a traditional chant about only having 50 days left until graduation.

Afther the shows are over the graduating stuents all march down to the rosegarden at our neighbor and sister organization Sigtunastiftelsen where they tossa a coin in the wishing well. The students then proceed to march through the town of Sigtuna.

The march returns to the steps at Midgården where the students receive their Abiturient-caps with many large grins as a result.

After receiving their caps the graduating students all change for dinner in order to end the day with the yearly ARCU gala organized by the student organization “Arcu et Fidibus”

While the graduating students were seated for dinner the younger students  were treated to hot-dogs while they waited patiently for the big gala event.

After dinner younger students, staff and many parents fill the Aula for an exciting gala event where prizes are given out to students in a multitude of categories.

Happy Easter!

Easter break is upon us, and yesterday we had a day full of activities. The activities began with an Easter assembly and continued with with a visit from Peter Wallenberg for Easter lunch. Towards the end of the day we had a student conference for all of our student associations.

Easter Assembly

The Easter assembly started off with a short talk from the school priest who managed to fit in some April fools jokes into his speech making it an enjoyable experience for all.

Our newest student organisation, Nobis, presented themselves at yesterday’s assembly. Nobis is here to work for equality at the school. Welcome!

Musical Performance

The performances at our assemblys are always enjoyable:

Easter Lunch with Peter Wallenberg

Classes continued as usual after assembly until it was time to break for lunch consisting of many traditional Swedish Easter dishes including herring, various pies, Jansson’s, meatballs, sausages, salmon and so forth. We were also graced by a visit from Peter Wallenberg, an alumni of Sigtunaskolan and currently active in the Sigtuna School Foundation through his work with Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse. Mr. Wallenberg ate lunch and conversed with some of our students and members of the management.

Peter "Poker" Wallenberg skojade och hade roligt i elevernas sällskap.

Peter “Poker” Wallenberg enjoyed spending time with our current students.

Student Conference

Several times a year, SSHL organises a student conference with representatives from each of our student organisations. These student conferences give the student organisations an oportuniuty to present their progress, plans and ideas for improvements to their organisation and the school. Yesterday’s conference saw SSHL’s new student association Nobis represented for the first time. We look forward to presenting Nobis in more detail soon.

Have a great Easter break!

Extracurricular activities are an important part of maintaining the motivation and energy required for academic success. Over the last few weeks the Fritiden extracurricular department at SSHL has sent teams to multiple events across Europe with a great deal of success.

SSHL Director Margret Benedikz will be in Singapore this week

SSHL Director Margret Benedikz will be in Singapore this week, in conjunction with the IB World Heads Conference, to meet with the Scandinavian community. She will be holding a lecture on Bilingualism & Swedish Education, hosted by the Norwegian Church Mission (Sjømannskirken).

“I visited Singapore last year and there was a lot of interest in the topic of bilingualism,” says Margret.

“So many families working in international communities like Singapore speak one language at home and then study or work in English. Parents are concerned about what this will mean for their children in real terms, say, if they want to come back to Sweden and study when they are used to studying in English.”

With many decades experience living and working in a multilingual environment, Margret will be talking about the challenges students and parents face, as well as providing useful advice on thriving in a multilingual learning environment.

For parents who’ve not educated their children in Sweden and are actually nowadays more familiar with what’s offer abroad, Margret will also be addressing the issue of how programmes like the IB fit into the Swedish education system, and what it means for university studies.

Margret’s lecture is open to everyone and she’ll be speaking at both 1 PM and 5 PM. For those coming at 1 PM, lunch is available from 12.
