Silver journey expedition – challenge completed!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Programme is available as one of SSHLs extracurricular activities since a few years, and it is growing in popularity.

Proceeding through the programme, the students will, as one of many things, plan and perform an expedition.

See the student’s own video from the expedition.

A group of students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Programme have just arrived back from Storulvån, finishing their “silver journey” challenge – an expedition in the Swedish mountains.

The group has completed the route “Jämtlandstriangen”, a hike of almost 50 km in 3 days. The students have camped, cooked their own food – and completed the trip with their own planning, in high spirits.

Well done students! What did you think about the hike?

Maurus Wagner:
– Though tough and hard sometimes, it was an amazing experience.

What was the best part?
– Arriving at the stations and having a rewarding feeling.

Did you meet any challenges?
– I have encountered blisters and tents blowing away, while getting soaked from the rain.

Would you recommend others to do this type of expedition?
– Probably yes since it was fun in the end and it gave me a perspective of what my body is actually capable of doing.

Oscar Hermans:
– I enjoyed the hike very much, it was nice how we were left to be self sufficient and not constantly monitored like how it is in England. I enjoyed the conversation and scenery as the best part. The challenge was the 7 blisters I got across both my feet which was problematic!

– Overall it was a nice break from the normal routine and as long as you like the people you walk with it is a very fun experience!

Erik Ellefors:

– It was good, very fun! I think the walking whilst talking to your peers was the best part.

Did you meet any challenges?

– Yes, I sprained my ankle on the first leg of the hike, so therefore the second and third leg were harder. Also, there was harsh wind whilst we were tenting which led to us having to move into the cabin.

Would you recommend this type of expedition?

– Yes absolutely, it was a lot of fun, despite the difficulty of the legs!
